In other words, you will support, or defend a position. So, if you have gun control, and you are the "affirmative side," you will support the government's position that these things should be regulated (regular people shouldn't have access to them). If you are on the "negative side," you will side with those people that think the government should not limit the types of weapons to which people may have access.
