Based on what you've learned in class about the compromises made regarding slavery at the Constitutional Convention...
- Do you think that the Constitution gave approval to slavery?

I do not think that the constitution
gave approval for slavery. In fact I can not find any thing about slaves in the constitution."The Fugitive Slave Clause is the last mention. In it, a problem that slave states had with extradition of escaped slaves was resolved. The laws of one state, the clause says, cannot excuse a person from "Service or Labour" in another state. The clause expressly requires that the state in which an escapee is found deliver the slave to the state he escaped from "on Claim of the Party." . I think that the framers were trying to avoid the issue on slavery, since there were arguments. The only other thing i found was that slavery was to be abolished.

No, I don't think the constitution gave approval for slavery. The last thing I remember seeing about slaves was The Fugitive Slave Clause...I dont even really remember much about the Fugitive Slave Clause but I do remember hearing about it and something about one state not being able to free a slave from another state. Well anyways I think the people of the Constitution were tryin to avoid and abolish slavery as best they could.

I think Jonathan C has a very good point.I didnt really think of the fact that there was still slavery in the south which triggered the civil war. He really put some thought into his work.

I disagree with Jonathan C beacuse, even though it may seem as the constitution approved slavery. No where in the constitution does it say that, slavery was approved. It maybe that slavery was an unwritten law such as the terms for presidents. But Jonathan does have a point. Slavery did trigger the civil war. It might have been that the emancipation proclamation was based on an unwritten law.

I don't think Constitution gave approval to slavery. This is the case because the Constitution just approved for slavery so the South could be on their side and there could be peace between them. Right after they made the ammendments, like Claudia said. This way the South had no other choice but to agree to the ammendmeants. The Constitution sort of trapped them in which it was a really good idea to do.
The constitution obviously gave approval to slavery. It demeaned women as well what made slaves any different? It was just one of the many terrible things that happened in the united states. An old sick tradition that the consitution was forced to include. Luckily the amendement process fixed all the demeanors that it had. The consitution actually set up the ending of slavery. Its amendment process allowed the constitution too move with the future. The emancipation proclamation freed all slaves. The constitution did aprrove the acts of slavery, but also set up its demise. Slavery in the united states never returned after the civil war. Its a sign of our perserverance and a sign that our government works towards freedom.
Stephanie makes a good point when she says that nowhere in the constitution is it mentioned that slavery was permitted. You know what, the word SLAVERY is never even used in the original constitution.
I can see we're going to have some very interesting discussions tomorrow.
I don't think that the Constitution gave approval for slavery in the United States. Slavery isnt even mentioned in the Constitution except for the Fugitive Slave Clause, (not counting the later admendments to the constitution). The framers tried to ignore this issue because it caused to many arguments. Most people (like farmers) use the slaves to work on plantations and farms so that is why the fought for the slaves to be kept. Lets thank the people like Abe Lincoln and Martin Luthor King Jr. for their help in abolishing slavery.
