The Small School Experience

Hello, Everyone:

QHST Seniors thanks so much for participating in these discussions with our freshman class. This is a very valuable communication between us, and your comments and insights are very much appreciated.

Like you, our freshman class at World Journalism is the first class in a new small high school. To that end, it would be great if you could share some of your reflections about your experiences in a small high school.

When posting, I'd like you to think of these questions

1. How has this experience helped you as a student, and as a person?
2. How have you contributed to the growth of your school's community?

Your ideas are greatly appreciated. Whatever other information you could or would share would be great as well. Thanks for your help!

1. this experience has helped me as a student because now the teachers are there to help me, and not just there to tell me they care. this has also helped me as a person because i have gotten better to deal with people.
2. I dont think so. Not that much anyway.

Looking back on the experience holistically, I think being part of a new, small school has been overwhelmingly positive. I have been able to do so many things (starting clubs, being involved in aspects my own education on levels other than my individual learning) and I've just been able to grow so much more being in such an intimate atmosphere. I don't know, I suppose it's a good sign when you can look and see the growth, not only in knowledge and academics, but also in character and confidence, in yourself. I just feel so lucky to have been a part of this experience.

Coming into a brand new building was very exciting. We didn’t realize the great advantages that we were given until our first year past, and others came into the building. A few things that we took advantage of was tackling new friendships and getting to know everyone since you are in a small school, you slowly meet everyone eventually. Since we had such a few amount of students we were able to have community building days that we did things that were fun to do, such as having a thanksgiving feast on the third floor where everyone brought in a huge amount of food and served the whole school, and of coarse our selves. I remember the aftermath of all the students in my community sprawled out on the floor full and relaxed just being in school. If I were to tell that story to a friend in an established school that’s over crowed, they would think its insane and impossible to do in there school, which is true since they don’t have the space or the resources. Being the first and having such a small number of students leaves much room for creativity and bonding experiences which you will soon treasure and remember even as your graduating high school, such as I am. I know that when I graduate I can tell stories of how we were the first to enter the building, and the first to make traditions which isn’t usually the case in every students life when they attend an established school. This experience made me more comfortable being in school, and even gave me days where I rather have been in school than to be at home since we always did something exciting or there was a teacher there I could always talk to. It benefits everyone when you have a small school, and I thinks it’s a shame when you realize it to late and you have more students coming into the building. It may seem annoying to have a small school because of “high school drama” but over the next 3 years left of high school, you come to a point where you realize its pointless and it was a time where you’ve grown as a person and with your friends, and let go of grudges and all the little fights that come along with high school episodes. As a person I have contributed to the growth of my schools community. Everyone does at one point, and my role as helping it grow was with the students, becoming involved in student government and now carried onto being apart of the senior government. Being in school for 4 years is a long time, you can only dig a grave for yourself if you plan on not taking advantage of school and making it a place you don’t want to be. Since you are the first you can make changes and make school a better place to be since you have room for change and opinions to be shared and taken account for. As a gradating senior in high school my wish for you all is to take hold of your high school life now and try to make your own adding your voice and opinions as to what goes on, what you like and dislike, and your input on what your school can do to grow bonds with students, faculty and as a community.
