HW Assignment 9/10/08

NO CREDIT FOR ANONYMOUS POSTS! PLEASE WRITE YOUR FIRST NAME, AND LAST INITIAL AT THE BOTTOM OF YOUR POST.

Here's the question:

Should the right to vote be limited only to people who are citizens of this country?

This is an issue that many of us, particularly those of us who have recently come to this country, feel quite strongly about. There are many different sides to the issue. One side, those who say "no," will state if you're not a citizen, you don't get to vote; kind of like if you go to the game without a ticket, you don't get in. The other side states that if these people are here working, and doing their best to start a new life, then the right to vote should be given to them.

Talk to people. Friends, relatives, the guy who owns the deli down the street. Your next-door neighbor. Get their ideas. Also, think about where they are coming from. What's their "perspective," or point of view. There's no easy answer to this.

Feel free to post to this as much as you like. Please maintain a sense of respect. It's OK to disagree, but not to disrespect. Good luck!

Yes i do think the right to vote should be limited to citizens of this country.I mean if you just came to this country and you could vote it would be silly. First of all you just came into the country so the chances are you don't know much about whats going on. Second of all you haven't been in the country long enough so you really don't know the people well. Therefore you may be voting for a person who may not be fit for whatever the voting is going on for. so really i really dont see why you should be allowed to vote when you're not even a citizen.

I think that people that aren't citizens should be allowed to vote, because they came to America to have a better life. These people should be allowed to participate in the government because they come to get a better home and job, and they should have choices to choose from, just like everyone else who already lives in America. The president is making many of the rules and regulations, and when everyone has to vote, shouldn't everyone be allowed to vote. the elections affect evryone, even the non- citizens, and that is why I believe they should be allowed to vote. Every person can make a difference, even is they aren't citizens. They came here to have a better life than they did before and everthing affects them when something happens to the country.

I think United States citizens should be the only people with the right to vote. The right to vote is a privilege that is earned by citizens of the U.S. If you want to vote you should become a citizen. You cannot risk having people who want to do harm to the country like terrorists have the ability to vote. The right to vote is part of the foundation that makes the U.S. a great country.

In my opinion i believe that only U.S. citizens can vote, because u need to nowe about our country in order to be able to know who to vote for and everything they represent. If u just entered the United States then u dont know anything political. Thats why i feel that U.S. citizens should vote.

I believe that people who are not natural born citizens of America should have the right to vote. But then again I say they should not have tha right to vote. The only reason I say this is because if they do not know what they are talking about then they should not have the right. Before if they are going to vote they should be asked what thier views are on the campaign?, who are you voting for and why?, and do you understand this person's (president, senator, etc.)'s motives? I think that would help a lot. But that should not just be asked to the non-citizens but to even the American citizens. Because there are just some people who just vote to vote.

I think that poeple that aren't citizens should get the right to vote because they do the sam ething citizens do. They work ,the buy a house, pay the bills and pay taxes.
IF non-citezen don't vote then they should do any of the thing that help the goverment. And also non-citizen have have ideas for our country if they could get the right to vote they could change our future. If they voted atleast they could know that they also pinch in our country ans voted who thought was their perfect president.

I think that if you are not a citizen then you should not be able to vote, mostly because; if you are not part of this country then why should you be able to decide who should winning the election.

Yes i do think that people who are not citizens of this country should have the right to vote because i think that everyone has their own opinions and they deserve the right to vote. I also think that the fact that people should not be based on becoming a citzen of this country from a test. I think that voting is a part of expressing opinions on politics and that everyone has the right to vote. And who ever wants to vote should.

I believe that only citizens that live in this country should have the right to vote. And that people in this country who don't have U.S citizenship. One reason is because is U.S citizens take an oath to protect and defend the United States from terrorist attacks. But some non citizens may not feel the same way about the United States.

I feel that the citizens of america should be the only ones to be elegeble to vote because the non american voters wouldnt know what is going on in america. If people been living in america within the past 10 years they should vote but if you just moved to america this year you wouldnt know anything about the presidential elections and how thedy work.

I think that if people aren't citizens, they should still have the right to vote. If a person from another country is coming over to America, they're obviously coming to start a better life. Just because you're from another country and you're new to the United States doesn't mean anything. If America is the land of freedom and the land of opportunity then why can't non-citizens vote? That is why I think they should be allowed to vote. Everyone should have a chance to speak up, no matter who you are or where you're from. If non-citizens want to vote, then it should be their right.

I think that people who are not citizens should have the right to vote although they maybe unaware of the things that they are voting for. even though they arent citizens they came here for a better life style. People came here for their freedom of opportunity, and other freedoms that their country may or may not have. Every person can make a diffrence even though they are not a citizen.

I do not think non citizens should have the right to vote. I belive this because I think that most outside countries do not show american polotics, therefore, the new non citezens may not have experience with american polotics, and they cannot vote for that. I also believe that to become a citizen, you must live in america, accept our rules, and way of life, and live in america for at least 10 years. It also depends where the non-citizen came form, such as north korea, they o not show american polotics there, so they may not know who to vote for, there for it is a bad idea to let them vote.

I believe that the power to vote should only be limited to US citizens. I believe this because non American citizens may not know enough about this country, or about the candadades. Also, because you need a test to be an American citizen, and that test is about the government, and if the non-American citizens don't know anything about our government, then they will just be voting without knowing anything about our government, and their votes may change the results of the elections every year.

I think only United States of America citizen should be voting for our mayors, govenors, and presidents. I think this becasue people who are not US citizens dont know that much about the people who they are voting for. They might not even understand what is going on and just want to go along with it. If you have just come to this country and became a citizen then fine, but if you are here with a green card I dont believe you should be voting. To vote is a privilage not a game. Some people who live in the US dont even vote because they cant follow what is going on, so waht makes you think someone from another country can follow what is going on?

Truly I believe that people that aren't citizens should be given the right to vote. I think this because if they came to this country its because they want to start a new life with freedom and opportunities. Its not right for only people with a citizenship to be able to vote because they aren't the only people in this country. People that aren't citizens come here to work and start new lives, meaning that they are also living in this country and doing something good for this country, then they should be given the right to vote.

I believe that only those who are U.S citizens should be aloud to vote. The people that want to live in America should become citizens if they aren't. To me its important because the citzens earn their right to vote and have been the country for a while. They enough about it to make these important decisions. If you are just coming you shouldn't get to vote because chances are you dont know what's best. You might be voting for the wrong thing and every vote counts. Like going to a game without a ticket. People payed and worked hard to get that ticket so why should those who did nothing be aloud in. You should know enough about the country before you have the right to vote for it. So i think you should be a citizen before voting.

I think everyone should be able to vote. People come to this country looking for a new life and a new career. Some people that live here know less than the people that live in say, Ireland or Germany. People do research before they come here so they obviously know how Bush is running this country and everything. Let me give you an example. My dad hasn't voted in 20 years, he could care less about the government. So he's basically wasting a chance to vote that an immigrant has been dying to get. When you think about it, it's very wrong. So in conclusion I think everyone, citizen, taxpayer, or not, should have the right to vote.

Yes, I do think the vote should be limited to citizens of the country, because people who just came into this country wouldn't know what's been going on about the political news. And, sometimes, they don't really understand much, so why should they get the right to vote? But, they can have their own opinion (or say) about it. So, technically, they still have some say about voting, but there not actually voting.

Yes, I think the right to vote should be limited to citizens of this country. The reason for this is because people who just came to this country don't really know who there are voting for or know what that person is all about. If we have a person who is from this country then they know who the correct person should be in this type of position. This is why I feel this way.

It is rather hard for me to decide whether or not people who are not legal citizens of this country should vote or not. I guess if I had to pick an answer right now, it would be yes. I do believe that people who are not U.S. citizens should be able to vote only under some circumstances.
When most people come to America, they must do some research or have heard something about this country to make them want to come. They've heard that we happen to be a country of freedom, liberty, justice, and opportunity. With that, they must know at least something about the country in which they wish to live their life in. Normally, they come here for a better life. I believe that if they intend on being quite hard-working, that they should have the right to vote. If they are here on green cards or visas and are paying the government taxes, I most definitely think that they should get the same privilages that we do because of the part(s) of the economy/society that they are contributing to.

i want to go back to the mets game example you said in class. is that okay? any who ... you don't know how much effert the people put in being there. what if the guy that didn't have a ticket didn't even try getting one? he just tryed walking in there like if his presince was enough. or maybe he has been saving up money for a year trying to get one ticket and he couldn't. and with the other guy that does have a ticket. what if he just got it because his friend couldn't go and didn't want to waist it. plus he doesn't even like the mets(but for real ... who doesn't like the mets?). or maybe he did extra hours at his job to get anough for the ticket. what ever way it isn't fair but that is just how it is. the thing is if you miss a mets game it wouldn't affect your life. who is picked as a president will.

I think that everyone who works and pays taxes in this country should be allowed to vote. If you are not a citizen and do decide to vote then it is mandatory that you take the citizenship test. What goes on in the U.S is breadcasted internationally so everyone has an idea of whats going on. You wouldn't vote on something you had no idea about because that would be wasting your time and its not logical. The people who aren't citizens do have a mind of their own and can listen to the debates between candidates to select who they feel is better. Its not like its a hard procedure. Since they live, work, pay taxes and live an American life like us they should have a say since theyre going through what we are too. All people should be allowed to vote

i think in between. In class we talked about them taking a test to see how much they know and if they know enough to vote, they CAN vote. i completely agree about the "game and no ticket" thing. They still should become citizens and they could know the same information that citizens do and if not they shouldn't vote.

I believe that people who aren't citizens, but came to America to have a new life, have a steady job, pays taxes and is at least a little bit informed should have the right to vote. I don't think people that aren't citizens should be judged on the citizenship test you have to take, because I myself being an American and I don't know that much on my country. I also think that if you came to this country, but didn't try to make an effort to be legal, or work off the books shouldn't be able to vote, because you are basically a ghost. You aren't trying to learn about America and are not trying to be informed. I agree that you don't have to be a citizen to vote, just as long as you try to make an effort on America's government.

In my opinion the only reason that non American citizens are not allowed to vote is because of the simple fact that in the eyes of some Americans, immigrants are of a "lesser status", and I find this completely upsetting. The natural rights that are automatically bestowed apon a person with birth are alienated by the laws of our government.
In my opinion if you are going to tell a person that they can't do something, then they should be given a reason as of why that is. I have never personally heard of the reasons that they are not allowed to vote. If you look at the bigger picture while these people are living here, whether that time be short or long termed, they are being governed by someone, haveing to follow their rules and regulations, so I think that they should have a say in chossing the peron they will have to listen to.

I do think that people who are not born in America should be able to vote. They would have to take the citizenship test to become an American citizen though. This test is very difficult people who are born in America may not be able to pass the test. If theese pass the test they should be able to vote. To pass this test you have to know about America.

In my opinion i think that the right to vote should be gained and the way that in can be gained is by becoming a citizen. A person trying to become a citizen must follow special regulations. Being a citizen is a big role; it's not just voting but knowing the economy and different problems that the state has. For those who recently come it's not something normal and they have to get used to the way of living in the United States and the rules here. I talked tomy neighbor about what she thought about being able to vote and she said that when she came from pakistan to this country she didn't think about anyhting but finding a job to help her relatives back in pakistan. Therefore she knew she couldn't vote right away even though she wanted to vote for George W. Bush. She tells me that now that she's acustomed to this country & became a citizen she wants to put her part in, by voting. It's very important to vote; because believe or not one person can make a huge difference. This is why i think that you should become a US citizen before having the privilege to vote.

In my opinion i think that US citizens should only have the privilege to vote. The right to vote is a very big deal since it's choosing your government for 4 or more years. people who recently come to USA don't know anything about this counrty; since it's a new system and way of things. I talked to my neighbor and she said that when she came to new york the only thing she cared about was sending money to her relatives back in pakistan. even though she would have wanted to vote for George W. Bush at that time she wasn't a citizen so she wasn't able to do so. NOW that she knows how things are in the USA she wants to vote because she wants to make a difference; but of course that took a time and dedication. This brings me to a conclusion that in my opinion only US citizens should be given the privilege to vote; and if they do become citizens they should have the to vote since one vote can make such a huge difference.

I think mixed things. I do beleive that there should be a limited amount of people to vote but i also dont see anything wronge with non-citizens voting. on thing i really dont agreee with is if they would vote just for the heck of it or just pick a name on a peice of paper. They should only vote if they are trully sure they know who they want to be elected and they know alot about them. I really dont like when i hear someone say i am going to vote fora certain person because hes looks cool. i think that is rediculous. So i think people who are interested in voltingotherwise why should we accept there vote if there just picking a name off a sheet.

I don't think that new citizens from other countries should be able to vote in their first three or so years of being an american. you don't really know how america runs itself until youre a citizens. Only Americans know how an American feels about their country, what is going on, and what America needs to improve itself. For example, if i were a new immagrant and I thought the taxes were high, but they really weren't, i would choose the candidate that would lower the tax prices, when America really needs something else changed. i don't see why new citizens should be allowed to vote.
