Cold War "Hot 24"

Hello, Everyone:

Listed below are terms, and concepts related to the Cold War, which I've called the "Hot 24." These terms, concepts, etc. are the most common subject of mult. choice questions, essays, etc. on the Regents exam.

Your mission: For each term,

For a brief but fairly thorough introduction to the still controversial Hiss Case [ the Hiss people still maintain that he was framed by the remanufacture of an old manual typewriter ], the Wikipedia is a good place to start

History

1. Truman Doctrine: The Truman Doctrine stated they would support Greece and Turkey with their economy and their military. They did this so Greece and Turkey wouldn’t fall under Soviet control.

2. Marshall Plan: The United States supplied economic aid to European nations to help them rebuild after World War II

3. Berlin Airlift: The United States and the British planes flew food and supplies into West Berlin. They did this because the Soviets blockaded the city.

4. NATO: A defensive military alliance formed in 1949 by ten Western European countries including The United States and Canada.

5. Warsaw Pact: A military alliance formed in 1955 by the Soviet Union and its Eastern European satellites.

6. Korean War: A conflict between North Korea and South Korea. The United States and other UN Countries fought on the side of the South Koreans.

7. H.U.A.C.: A congressional committee that investigated communist influence inside and outside the United States government.

8. Rosenberg Trial:

9. McCarthyism: The attacks often unsubstantiated by Senator McCarthy and others on people suspected of being communist.

10. Domino Theory: A theory that if the nation falls under communist rule nearby nations will also fall under communist rule.

11. CIA: The Central Intelligence Agency. A US agency created to gather secret information about foreign governments.

12. Eisenhower Doctrine: A US commitment to defend the Middle East against attack by communist.

14. Bay of Pigs: The president advised the CIA to secretly train Cuban exiles for an invasion of Cuba.

15. Cuban Missile Crisis: The Soviet premier promised to defend Cuba with Soviet arms.

16. Tonkin Gulf Resolution: Gave the president broad powers to wage war in Vietnam.

17. Vietnam War: America joined the Vietnam War in 1950.

18. War Powers Act of 1973: Limiting a presidents right to send troops into battle without consulting Congress.

19. 26th Amendment: Increased the voting age to the age of 18.

20. Iron Curtain: An imaginary line that separated the communist countries between Eastern and Western Europe.
