Neutrality: This is when a country is neutral when there is an international war, which means that they don't get involved. This made it so that the US didn't have to get involved in other wars besides their own, like WWI.

Imperialism: This is the believe that one country should take over another to gain power in their country and globaly. This believe is what made the US take over other countries to use for themselves, like Hawaii.

Yellow Journalism: These are newspaper articles that are aver exaggerated about some event that occured. These articles have big headlines and are used to sell more papers. These papers where also used in the late 19th century to convince people that Spain was torchuring their colony, Cuba, in several different ways, and caused the US to go to war with them,

Dollar Diplomacy: Dollar Diplomacy was when the US tried to get what they wanted by using money, and if that didn't work, they would use force. This was important to the US because this helped the US get many things that they were aiming for.

Open Door Policy: This is when the US made the Open Door Policy in China, allowing fair, and equal trade with every country. This helped the US get a lot of goods and money from China, for all of the goods the US had to trade to them.

Roosevelt Corollary: This is when President Roosevelt used sstrategies like the Big Stick Policy to set up an economy in some Cirribean countries. This is how President Roosevelt got most of his Latin American countries.

Boxer Rebellion: This is when some Chineese Rebellions rebelled against the Open Door Policy, and were then easily crushed by the US. This was important because it showed how some people felt about imperialism.

Panama Canal: The Panama Canal was a canal right through the country Panama. The canal was made so the US didn't have to go around South America in order to get to Asia. This was important because it gave the US easier acess to Asia, and it also showed what the Dollar Diplomancy was all about.

Alfred T. Mahan: He was a sea philosipher who supported imperialism for naval and merchant purposes, he also worked with President Roosevelt before he became president. He was an inspiration to many Americans, and without him, the US wouldn't of aimed for Hawaii.

U.S.S. Maine: The USS Maine was a giant battle ship that one day sailed in the Harvana Harbor, and was then blown up mysteriously. The signifigance of this was that it put much emotion into people and made them think that Spain did it. This was the main purpose why the US went to war with Spain.

built by the United State (1904-1914) which joined the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean.

U.S.S. Maine- a United States battleship - the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine led to the beginning of the Spanish – American War

2. After identifying each term, discuss why each one is important (its significance).

Neutrality is important because it could lead to civilized conversations held by a third party to resolve issues between two warring parties. Peace talks held at neutral site sometimes allows the opposing sides to sit back and think about ways to resolve their issues.
Imperialism played a very important role in the history of the world. It actually helped shape the world as we know it today. Without imperialism the United States would not be the major power it is today. Imperialism helped us to expand our territories, expand our economic trade with foreign countries and helped us become a world power.
Yellow journalism is important because it helped promote American pride prior to the Spanish American War. It helped build support in America which eventually led to the war. It convinced the American people that Spain purposely sunk the U. S. S. Maine and that we needed to act fast to protect American interest. Sinking of the U.S.S. Maine was the straw that broke the camels back and led us into war with Spain. With America winning the war it also helped us gain new territories such as Cuba and the Philippines which aided our expansion and dominance around the world.
Dollar diplomacy and the Open Door policy were important to our economic growth and trading power with foreign countries overseas. It created free access to various ports in Asia and increased American business. It also allowed us to help any country that was fiscally and politically unstable and prevent that country from being taken over by the European countries. This would be a very important political statement that the United States would make to the entire world.
The Roosevelt Corollary helped us in protecting U. S. interest in the western hemisphere and in Latin American nations. This is extremely important because it helped the growth of our economy and trade, protected our borders against any foreign attack and provided a presence of power in the international world.
The failure of the Boxer Rebellion was important because it allowed foreigners to stay and conduct business in China. If the Boxers would have won then all foreigners would have been forced out and international trading might have ended.
The building of the Panama Canal was critical in opening a new trade route. It established a shorter route for ships so that they could travel from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to go around the much longer route around South America. It greatly reduced the distance and time required to travel from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean.
Alfred T. Mahan’s ideas helped the United States created a powerful navy which helped tremendously in the wars fought in U. S. history. His belief in controlling the seas with military power would play a vital role during war time. Controlling the sea would eliminate countries from attacking another country by sea and it would also eliminate the transportation of military supplies to soldiers during war time.
